You Can Leave Your Hat On

SPOILER ALERT: I am currently nearing the end of Chapter 12 in "Shadow of Night".

Jeez Louise!! I finally get to the part I've been waiting for since reading about the bundling in A Discovery of Witches...and what do I do?  FIRE UP THE LAPTOP so I can google 16th Century Wedding Gowns because I need to know EXACTLY what he's untying and undoing and where in GOD'S NAME the rasps and tugs are coming from!!!!!!!!!

Actually...I think I'm just making it last. ;)

  1. FINALLY!!!!!! :-D

Oh, and as far as the wardrobe is concerned, I guess I didn't realize that these gowns were "pieced" together as the women dressed. I just figured it was a complete, connected garment, but that doesn't sound like it's the case. That would make mixing and matching fun, I would think. But yeah, I can see how (non-manpire) husbands getting brides out of those contraptions on their wedding night might be a problem.

  2. ech! Don't worry about that. As long as it blooming comes off! ;) Finally!!! Cari, I also didn't know the garments were pieced together. Why didn't Matthew just take a knife and cut all the laces? :)

  3. Matt doesn't need a knife-he has super vamp strength. He's also patient as he has shown by his restraint and Doing Everything But.
I miss the affection between them and the witchy fireworks.
They have two objectives in the past, the book and a witch tutor. They're not making any progress toward those.
I have to admit I like learning the back story about Matt's human wife and son. 1500 years and he still misses them. Sigh.

  4. Terry, I agree. Without being spoilery, I'm further along and frustrated as all get out. I feel like this book is filler. Lots of it.

  5. I'm loving the book and super excited to go meet the author tomorrow!

I don't really see it as filler. I mean, you guys all read the Outlander books, right? The same thing could be said about Diana's books. Almost everyone I talk to has such a hard time with Fiery Cross because of the Gathering and how it is a whole lot of "nothing". I think with historical fiction that part of why I love it so much is all the little details about the way of life and their day to day. Too often books just rush through things and you don't really get a feel for how their lives really were. I love being immersed in their lives and I'm not always in a rush to move onto the next action or whatever. I just got to the part after the wedding and their bit after where the messengers came and they are going to have to leave I was actually like "no - I want them to stay there!"

  6. I agree, Brandy. Part of what I love about the Outlander novels are the day-to-day details about their lives. I think that DH is trying to do the same with this book, and I'm happy to be along for the ride. :-)

  7. I know this is off topic but I just met her, got my books signed and a picture with her - she is so nice! We talked about Anne Rice & Diana Gabaldon. I told her how she combined my two favorite genres. She said she read the Mayfair witch series first before the vampire ones. She said she has all of both Anne & Diana's books on her bookshelf. I told her I feel like she wrote these just for me so thank you.

  8. Forgot to add I'm sitting in the auditorium in the 3rd row waiting for her to come speak now. She did some signing before and will finish after.

  9. Oh my gosh! I have so much good info for you guys. I took crazy notes and I got a 5 min video of her doing a reading as well. I'll have to type it all up. Should I post here or Carol, would you want me to email it to you and you post??

  10. Ack, Brandy! I was there, too, and got a picture with her. I was with fan/friends; you could have sat with us, but you were closer. I heard it was the biggest signing yet for her.

  11. OH! I wish I had known, we could have definitely met up! And how great it was her biggest signing yet! Didn't you love all the info and questions/answers? I filled up a huge page of notes of things she said to pass along to other fans. You know when the person asked her what books she likes to read? Did you happen to catch the first one she said? I missed it. All I got was A.S something and I might even be wrong about that.

It was a great event though and so happy I got to go!! I just posted my pic with her on her FB page and she "liked" it. :)

  12. Don't worry about spoilers, she even tells people to be careful when asking questions. The two readings she did were within the first 5 chapters and nothing was spoilerish.

  13. I have to tell you, the bundling was much sexier on the re-read than on the first read. That being said!! I'm so HAPPY that they finally got down to business!!

  15. I hope this trilogy is so popular that they make a TV show with a witch and vampire couple who go around solving mysteries while fighting off her in-laws.
